Glass at Corning, New York

Two-Night Tour: Thursday, May 1st to Saturday, May 3rd

glassblowersSmithsonian Associates has partnered with the Walter to offer this program to Walters Members at a special DISCOUNTED rate.

Visit the home of Steuben Glass and time-travel through 35 centuries of glassmaking. Experience the fire and flow of a premier glassmaking demonstration, and explore the marvels of glass technology, past and present.

Highlights include a tour of Corning corporation headquarters (usually not open to the public) and the 11 sculptures created by glass artists for the atria there. Executive director David Whitehouse escorts the group through the new special exhibit Reflecting Antiquity: Modern Glass inspired by Ancient Rome and curators present tours of the other special exhibit, Masters of Studio Glass: Joel Philip Myers and Steven I. Weinberg; the Carder Glass Gallery; the permanent collections; and the Innovation Center. A unique camera allows participants to watch glass melting in the furnace during a hot glass show.

There are opportunities to make glass (hot, warm, and cold) and free time to browse the myriad shops on re-created 19th-century Market Street.

Special meals include lunch at the cooking school of Pennsylvania College of Technology of Penn State and dinner at a restaurant founded in 1894.

You must mention that you are a member of the Walters Art Museum in order to receive the discounted rate.

All fees inclusive with the following exceptions: Participants purchase their own Thursday supper, Friday lunch, and Saturday supper en route. All other meals are included. Glassmaking at the Corning Museum studio is included in the tour cost. An additional opportunity to blow a glass ornament at Hands-on-Glass studio is available for a small fee.
