The Walters Art Museum Appoints Two New Curatorial Directors

Griffith Mann will lead the curatorial division and Regine Schulz will be the first director of international curatorial relations

Baltimore—Walters Director Gary Vikan announces two new curatorial director positions—Griffith Mann as the director of the curatorial division and Regine Schulz as the first director of international curatorial relations. Previously both acted as co-directors of the curatorial division. Mann has also been promoted from associate curator to full curator.

“I’m excited to make these two curatorial appointments, which give Griff and Regine the opportunity to focus on their specialties,” said Vikan. “Griff will provide excellent leadership for the curatorial division while Regine will continue to foster important relationships with art institutions worldwide.”

Along with Mann’s duties as curator of medieval art, he will supervise six curatorial departments—ancient art, medieval art, Asian art, manuscripts and rare books, Renaissance and Baroque art, and 18th- and 19th-century art—as well as four additional departments—curatorial publications, the library, photography and the registrar. He will oversee installation projects, coordinate the development of exhibitions and help formulate the division’s policies, budgets and strategies.

In his nine years with the Walters, Mann has held several positions, such as the Robert and Nancy Hall Associate Curator of Medieval Art, the Zanvyl Krieger Curatorial Fellow in Manuscripts and Rare Books, and research associate for the department of manuscripts and rare books. He received his Ph.D. in medieval art from the Johns Hopkins University in 2002.

Schulz will continue as the curator of ancient art while working with the director to manage the museum’s international policy and strategy and promote the Walters worldwide. She will also develop and support international relationships, enabling the Walters to partner with other museums, including the State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg and the Novgorod Museum Federation, to host unique exhibitions, such as “Sacred Arts and City Life: The Glory of Medieval Novgorod.”

Schulz has acted as the museum’s curator of ancient art for six years. In addition, she is active in the International Council of Museums, serving as the chairperson of the international committee of Egyptology and an elected member of the ethic committee. She is also an associate professor of Egyptology at the Institute Egyptology at the Ludwig-Maximilians University, Munich (Germany). Schulz received her Ph.D. in Egyptology from this university in 1985.

Other curatorial announcements include Martina Bagnoli’s promotion from assistant curator to associate curator of manuscripts and rare books, C.D. Dickerson’s appointment as the assistant curator of Renaissance and Baroque Art and Robert Mintz as the assistant curator of Asian art.

The Walters Art Museum is located in Baltimore’s historic Mount Vernon Cultural District at North Charles and Centre streets. Its permanent collection includes ancient art, medieval art and manuscripts, decorative objects, Asian art, and Old Master and 19th-century paintings. Peabody Court is the official hotel of the Walters Art Museum. For hotel reservations, call 1-800-292-5500.
