FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Monday, July 28, 2008 JEWELRY FAIR AT THE WALTERS, NOV. 20–23
The Jewelry Fair will complement the upcoming special exhibition Bedazzled: 5,000 Years of Jewelry Baltimore—The Women’s Committee of the Walters Art Museum presents the fifth annual Jewelry Fair at the Walters, Thursday, Nov. 20–Sunday, Nov. 23. The Jewelry Fair will feature 21 artisans in the Walters’ Sculpture Court, offering pieces varying in style from traditional to contemporary as well as in materials from copper and clay to diamonds and platinum. The weekend will also include many programs, such as an opening night preview party, jewelry lectures and demonstrations.
This special event will celebrate jewelry as an art form by complementing the exhibition Bedazzled: 5,000 Years of Jewelry. With more than 200 pieces from numerous cultures and over five millennia, Bedazzled will present some of the Walters’ greatest masterpieces as well as many hidden treasures on view for the first time.
Visitors can attend the Jewelry Fair Friday, Nov. 21 through Sunday, Nov. 23 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission costs $10, which includes the entry fee for the entire weekend.
The Women’s Committee is proud to partner with MICA for Jewelry Fair 2008. Baltimore artist and philanthropist Betty Cooke will be the Honorary Chair of Jewelry Fair 2008.
PROGRAMS
SPECIAL EVENTS “First Look” Preview Party Thursday, November 20, 6–9:30 p.m. Price: $110, includes weekend admission fee Location: Sculpture Court The Jewelry Fair kicks off with its “First Look” Preview Party, offering visitors the first opportunity to view the jewelry and meet the artisans. The elegant evening will also include a fashion show highlighting Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) students’ jewelry and textile designs.
Young Professionals’ Cocktail Party Friday, November 21, 6–8 p.m. Price: $35, includes weekend admission fee Young professionals are invited to kick off their weekend at the Jewelry Fair. Guests can enjoy examining the MICA students’ works on display and shopping at the jewelry artisans’ booths.
LECTURES Tony Duquette: A Jeweled Life Friday, November 21, 11 a.m. Price: $75, includes mimosas and weekend admission fee This lecture presents jewelry and interior designer Hutton Wilkinson. He is the owner, creative director and president of Tony Duquette Studios Inc, which offers custom interiors, fine jewelry and decorative home products. Wilkinson’s designs have appeared on television shows, such as HGTV, E!-Style and E! Entertainment.
Sudha Pennathur: Jewelry and Crafts as Ornamentation and Wealth in India Friday, November 21, 2 p.m. Price: Free Sudha Pennathur is a nationally renowned designer from California. Working with award winning artisans and hundreds of craftspeople in India, she designs and produces jewelry, accessories and decorative arts for the home reflecting her distinct and rich cultural heritage. Her collections include more than 1,200 styles of jewelry, textiles, accessories and ornaments in some of America’s most famous retail institutions, including Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman.
JEWELRY FAIR FORUM Saturday, November 22, 11 a.m. Price: $25, includes weekend admission fee MICA president Fred Lazarus will moderate a forum with jewelry artists Betty Cooke, Shana Kroiz, Joyce J. Scott and Helen Drutt English.
JEWELRY-MAKING DEMONSTRATIONS Saturday, November 22, times TBD Price: Free Learn how to create your own dazzling jewelry when the exhibiting artisans offer demonstrations.
WORKSHOP Bead Making for Kids! Saturday, November 22, 1–4:30 p.m. Price: Members $25 per child; non-members $35 per child Ages 7–10 A special guest educator will lead kids in creating wacky, fun and beautiful types of beads. While the children experiment with a range of materials to make one-of-a-kind wearable pieces, parents can indulge in the Jewelry Fair and exhibition Bedazzled.
DROP-IN ART ACTIVITIES You’re a Gem! Saturday, November 22 and Sunday, November 23, 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Price: Free Families will discover and create treasures inspired by the gold, gems and jewels found in the Bedazzled exhibition. Kids of all ages will go home with new adornment, jeweled paintings and sacred amulets.
LECTURE & BOOK SIGNING A Mysterious Wedding Ring: Tracing Personal Jewelry Histories Sunday, November 23, 2 p.m. Benjamin Zucker, Collector and President of the Precious Stones Company in New York Price: Free, pre-registration highly recommended Location: Graham Auditorium Benjamin Zucker has built an impressive jewelry collection, dating from about 600 B.C. to present, which focuses on finger rings but also includes bracelets, earrings and pendants. Zucker will share stories about his collection, which supplement the Bedazzled exhibition, and offer insights into the role gems and rings have played throughout the history of jewelry design.

The Walters’ Women’s Committee was formed in 1963 to support the museum and its mission. Since 1990, the committee has raised over $1 million through events like Art Blooms and the Jewelry Fair for exhibitions, special projects and the Education Endowment for the Walters Art Museum.
The Walters Art Museum is located in Baltimore’s historic Mount Vernon Cultural District at North Charles and Centre streets.
