Gallery Fun

Art museums aren't just for looking anymore. We have developed a variety of hands-on learning materials that are sure to appeal to all types of learners. Visitors can now be actively involved in their own learning process and interact with the art on their own terms. Use of interactive gallery materials is always free!

ArtCarts

Bright, colorful, and loaded with free in-gallery activities for the entire family, ArtCarts are available on the weekends and during school break weeks.Found in the Centre Street Lobby and throughout the museum, ArtCarts focus on our ancient Greek, Renaissance, 19th-century, and Asian art collections. You can borrow a collection specific children's book to read in the galleries, a drawing kit or a puzzle. Or try on a costume, play seek and find. ArtCarts are also the home of our FunPacks and Discovery Quilts.

Discovery Quilts

Discovery Quilts allow visitors to sit down in the galleries, relax, and explore art in a family-friendly way. Pockets, pouches, and flaps open to reveal a wonderfully interactive world of learning about art and culture. Available on weekends and during school break weeks - find them on the ArtCarts located around the museum.

Japanese Art
Discover the world of the Samurai and host your own tea ceremony.

Renaissance Art
Learn about life in the Italian Renaissance and prepare for a grand Medici feast!

19th Century Art
Use all of your senses to imagine life as a child living during the 19th century.

Ancient Greek Art
Explore the fantastic mythological creatures of ancient Greece and create your own fabulous animal.

Family Guides 

Family Guides introduce our intergenerational audiences to selected works of art at the Walters. They encourage new, fun ways of looking at and learning about art and culture together. Family Guides are available for the Palazzo (Renaissance and Baroque collections) and the Ancient Greek collection. Pick up a Family Guide at the Visitor Information Desk or in the lobbies of the Ancient World and Palazzo galleries.

ArtSacks

These portable, lunchbox style kits are designed for kids of all ages and contain hands-on activities to guide your journey through the Walters' permanent collection of ancient and medieval art. Check one out at the Visitor Information Desk.

Family Audio Guide

This audio tour leads children and their families on a captivating, kid-friendly journey through the museum. Listeners will be introduced to all sorts of fascinating facts and intriguing information, which will stimulate family discussions. Find out things like how long that alligator hanging on the wall really is! The Family Audio Tour may be checked out at the museum admissions desk.

Wondrous Journeys Passports

Need a way to spend the afternoon? How about decoding a hieroglyphic message, finding hidden pictures, or completing a maze to release the snake goddess? Stop by the Visitor Information Desk and pick up your free Wondrous Journeys Passport before entering the galleries. Then spend some time getting to know the Walters.
